Scubamap

I often thought having a [Gg]oogle maps mashup thingy for diving sites would be a good idea; well someone beat me to it.
So far, there’s nothing in there for Ireland. I was tempted to insert the Sovereigns, then I had visions of divers from all over the globe coming to dive the wreck of the Nellie, see the Grotto, or even search for Rory’s missing dive computer, and I just thought that, well, maybe, they might be a little disappointed.
Anyway, I think it might be worth adding some of our favourite sites in there.

Somebody updated the site wih every diveable duck pond in the Netherlands, with the comment “good for macro photography”; in other words pea soup. Perhaps we should list Cork Lough.
…oh those crrrazy hollanders!
Still, if your national pastime is turning sea into land, you’re probably not going to be spoiled for good dive sites.
Hi folks – the guys up here in Galway Sub Aqua Club have added that to the club website.
It might be worth looking into for you guys, rather than adding to the worldwide one.
Have a look at this link to see what I mean.

The Galway map just has the names of the dive sites hard-coded in the page’s javascript. The Scubamap site is a much more interesting approach – it uses a wiki that allows anyone to enter their own divesite, either by selecting it on the map or entering the coordinates, along with details on type of diving, viz, life etc.
Or, another neat alternative, geotag our dive photos on flickr with the dive site location and display them on a flickrmap…

I think you have overestimated the technical abilities of about 99% of our club members, including me.
It sounds more complicated than it is. You can do something similar through the Flickr interface by choosing Organize and selecting the Maps tab. It’s a fairly straightforward drag-and-drop interface that allows you to give a geographical reference to each of your photos. Once that’s done you can see e.g. a map of all the photos in the club pool that have been geotagged…
