Portability Policy
APIs and Data Formats
This site provides Atom & RSS feeds, an XML-RPC endpoint, and some RDF output.
Identity and Authentication
Existing Identity - we prefer if you login using OpenID or Facebook Connect. You can create your own identity, but be aware that we don’t currently encrypt your credentials, so don’t use the password from your bank account.
Working with Things Stored Somewhere Else
Visitor – embed your Flickr photos, YouTube videos, etc as much as you like. The more the merrier.
Watching For Updates
Watch For Updates – This product watches the third party for changes, and updates its own view of the remote thing to match.
Broadcasting Changes Made Here
Chatty – Our site wide activity stream is forwarded to our Facebook Group. You can subscribe to email notifications from our discussion groups.
Access from Other Products
Backing Up
Some Download - a combination of your Author feed and Personal Activity feed should give you access to most of what you’ve contributed, but I haven’t tested that fully.
Public Data
Provider Only – you can do what you like with your own contributions. For anybody else’s work, please ask their permission.
Closing an Account
Accounts Deleted Upon Request – This product has the ability to remove a person’s account and all relevant data, and will do so when requested by the person or third party with appropriate legal standing.
Where Things Are Stored
All our data is hosted on Blacknight‘s servers.
Your Portability Policy
Your portability policy can contain whatever works for your product and your customers. Share your approach, business model or technologies. Help your community make informed choices.
We have provided this set of questions to highlight areas related to data portability. They are not comprehensive and will evolve over time. You are encouraged to add whatever topics or issues will help your users make informed decisions.
Version 1.0, updated May 18, 2010.
APIs and Data Formats
Are your APIs and Data Formats Documented?
- Yes – provide a link to the documentation
- No – explain which formats are documented and which are not
- Doesn’t Apply
Sample:
SocialSharingSite uses both public and licensed, proprietary data formats. Our own activity stream data is made available via Atom. However, we use VerySecureDRM for purchased, digital downloads and this format is not available for publication. See the ‘File Formats’ section of our support area for detailed information.
